Until we get equality in education, we won’t have an equal society
— Sonia Sotomayor, Supreme Court Justice
    • Latinos make up nearly 19% of the U.S. population, but only about 5% of U.S. lawyers.

    • Only 25.2% of adults in the Upper Rio Grande region hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, below the Texas average.

    • Research shows mentorship increases graduate enrollment — yet many Valley students never meet a practicing attorney.

Our mission

Valley to Law exists to expand access to the legal profession for students in the Rio Grande Valley by providing mentorship, guidance, and exposure to legal career pathways.

We aim to close the gap between talent and opportunity by supporting students across the Rio Grande Valley as they pursue higher education and careers in law. Through community building, mentorship, and practical resources, Valley to Law works to cultivate the next generation of legal professionals and advocates from the Valley — for the Valley.

Why law?

Law shapes the rules that govern opportunity, property, education, business, and civil rights.

Lawyers advocate for individuals, protect communities, and influence policy at every level, from local government to the highest courts.

For students in the Rio Grande Valley, pursuing law is not only a professional achievement. It is an opportunity to serve, represent, and strengthen the communities that shaped them.

A legal career opens doors to:

  • Public service

  • Advocacy and civil rights work

  • Business and entrepreneurship

  • Government and policy

  • Judicial leadership

When Valley students enter the legal profession, they bring lived experience, cultural understanding, and regional perspective into spaces where decisions are made.
